Alaska Native Culture Compare & Contrast Assignment
Utilize Steve Langdon’s The Native People of Alaska in class, the Internet, and library resources to access information and construct a booklet comparing and contrasting two Alaska Native cultures. Construct a booklet (or slide show) comparing the five items listed below for each of Alaska Native culture you have chosen. Be neat and have fun!
Culture I: Culture II: _
For each culture you have chosen complete the following five items to compare:
q Draw/illustrate or find a picture of one tool, a piece of art, or something representative of hunting technology for both the cultures you choose. Write one to two (1-2) paragraphs explaining how each item is utilized, what the item is made of, and the significance. qDraw/illustrate or find a picture of something representative of the house/dwelling and/or social organization for each group. Write one to two (1-2) paragraphs about the size, shape, layout, and construction materials utilized, and specify who would live in the dwelling. q Draw/illustrate or find a picture and identify an item utilized for travel. Include one to two (1-2) paragraphs describing what the item is made of, who operates the piece of equipment, and other general characteristics. qDraw/illustrate or find a picture of a piece of clothing (or a person in traditional attire) unique to each culture. Write one to two (1-2) paragraphs explaining what the clothing is made of, and how it is unique to that culture, and who wore it. q Draw/illustrate or find a picture of one land and one sea mammal that resides in the area of the Alaska Native groups you have chosen. Write a one to two (1-2) paragraphs description that should include what the animal looks like, how much it weights, population numbers, and migration patterns and possibly how the animal is used by the group. qWorks cited: You must use at least three resources and provide an MLA style Works Cited list. (Use Easy Bib or Bib me, but remember you have to format the font when you paste resources into a slideshow or word processing document.) qEverything must be in booklet form on construction paper—OR—you may use a presentation tool like PowerPoint, Keynote or Google Presentation. You must have a title page (or slide) including your name(s) and period and both names of the cultures you selected. Neatness counts! (10 points)
~Your paragraphs must be original and developed by you. You can’t copy and paste information from the web to describe and compare/contrast your drawings/illustrations/pictures. ~Don’t simply EXPLAIN the tools, art, equipment, etc. used by each group. Compare and contrast the items they used; what they are made of, how they were used, dimensions, etc. ~Description, paragraphs, and bibliography must be typed. ~Focus on traditional native culture. Try to find images and information related to how the natives lived and the tools and housing they utilized prior to contact with the Russians.
